Physical Education Comprehensive P-12

The Physical Education P-12 (BA/BS) degree from the University of West Alabama is dedicated to shaping the health and well-being of future generations. By pursuing this program, students commit to becoming certified physical education teachers, recognized by the Alabama State Department of Education, with the opportunity to teach in preschools, elementary, middle or high schools in Alabama or states with reciprocity agreements. This program also opens doors for individuals interested in coaching, as schools often seek teachers/coaches. Moreover, even for those who choose not to work in a school setting, the comprehensive knowledge of the teaching and learning process acquired through this program is invaluable for working with individuals of all ages. 

The program boasts several strengths, including hands-on activities in small classes, teaching experience opportunities at the on campus charter school and campus school. Students are exposed to early field experiences and undertake an internship covering grades P-12 providing practical insights into the teaching profession. With a close-knit community, students develop strong connections with their peers and professors, who are active professionals in their respective organizations and bring firsthand experience as physical education teachers and coaches.

PE200 Foundations of Health and Physical Education 

3 Credits

An introduction to the profession includes theories of education and learning; education requirements for various certifications, both in teaching, exercise science and sport management; the historical development of physical education and health behaviors; professional organizations and career opportunities. The student will develop a personal philosophy and set career goals. For teaching certification and sport management emphasis. 

PE251 Concepts of Health, Wellness and Fitness 

3 Credits

Study of basic concepts of health, wellness and physical fitness including principles of endurance, strength, flexibility and cardiorespiratory/vascular training, stress management and lifetime fitness needs. The student will develop a personal plan for lifetime fitness and wellness. 

PE345 Motor Learning and Motor Development 

3 Credits

Concepts and process of life time motor skill acquisition and the variables that influence motor learning and performance. The student will be able to recognize motor development stages and apply concepts of motor learning in teaching motor skills. Prerequisites: BY231 and AH200 or EX200 or HPE200 or PE200 or SM200 and six hours of Athletic Training, Exercise Science, Physical Education and/or Sport Management. 

Career Outlook

Graduates of this program have a promising career outlook in the field of physical education and coaching. Graduates will be well-prepared to pursue careers as Physical Education teachers in K-12 settings, bringing their expertise and passion for promoting physical activity and healthy lifestyles to students of all ages. They can also enter the profession as certified teachers, equipped with the necessary skills to effectively teach and engage students in physical education classes. 

Additionally, this program opens doors to coaching positions in various settings, including schools, youth programs, YMCA or recreational facilities. Successful high school coaches often have the opportunity to advance to coaching positions at the college level and higher. Graduates with this degree can also explore opportunities as sports coaches, or specialized roles such as adapted physical education teachers where they can make a positive impact on individuals with special needs.
