The University of West Alabama (UWA) recently awarded the Honorable Senator Gerald Dial an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters in recognition of his outstanding contributions to public service and his lasting impact on the state of Alabama.

During the fall commencement exercises, UWA President Emeritus Ken Tucker praised Sen. Dial’s distinguished career, noting, “Gerald’s integrity and dedication to the state have made his alma mater intensely proud. As someone who has devoted his life to public service and education, he embodies this University’s core values and mission. His legacy is a testament to the transformative power of education and public service, and his tireless advocacy for Alabama has earned him the respect and admiration of his peers and constituents alike.”

A native of Lineville, Alabama, Sen. Dial’s career in public service spans several decades. He served as a member of the Alabama State Senate from 2010 to 2018 and was previously a representative in the Alabama House of Representatives from 1974 to 1982. In addition to his legislative work, Sen. Dial has had a diverse career, including roles as a teacher, coach, real estate developer, and a member of the Lineville City Council.

He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Livingston State University (now UWA), where he met his wife, Faye, also an alumna of the University. Sen. Dial’s commitment to service extends beyond his political career, serving in the Alabama National Guard, achieving the rank of Brigadier General, and demonstrating remarkable leadership and dedication to his country and his state.

Sen. Dial humbly accepted the honor at the ceremony and shared a few words of encouragement with the graduating class. “It is a great honor to be here today,” he said as he was hooded. “A lot of people, when they get their diploma, just hang it on the wall. But I encourage you to consider your diploma a stock certificate in this University, reflecting the investment that UWA, President Emeritus Tucker, and the faculty and staff have made in you. You are now responsible for going out and making a positive change in the world.”

Though retired from public office, Sen. Dial’s passion for service remains unwavering. He continues to be deeply involved in Alabama’s educational and business sectors, notably as a co-founding member of the board of directors for the Alabama International Education and Economic Partnership (ALIEEP). Through this organization, Dial helps recruit teachers from South Korea, Vietnam, Taiwan, and India to enrich the educational experience for students across the state.

Sen. Dial’s integrity, dedication, and leadership have left an indelible mark on Alabama. His career inspires future generations of leaders, and his contributions will continue to shape the state for years to come.
