Adonis Williams was in junior high before he experienced what it is like to have a male educator in a classroom. One of only a few male students in the junior and senior blocks studying elementary education on campus at the University of West Alabama, Williams and his classmates are doing their part to break the cycle for the next generation.
The University of West Alabama will host its 12th annual University Research Symposium (URS) Monday, March 4 (virtually) and in-person Tuesday, March 5. Led by the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, the event showcases 106 research presentations by undergraduate, graduate and professional researchers from UWA and 20 other universities across seven countries. Visual artist Garland Farwell kicked off a year-long artist-residency, Monday, Feb. 19 at the University of West Alabama’s Julia Tutwiler Library, with a folk-art exhibit of hex signs, a uniquely American art form and best-known symbol of the Pennsylvania Dutch, interpreted through an African American, southern and rural lens.

Despite challenges, obstacles, and disappointments, Keya Tabb never gave up on her dream of becoming a registered nurse. Now enrolled in the University of West Alabama’s associate of science in nursing (ASN) program, the 52-year-old Tuscaloosa native is on track to graduate this May and credits her perseverance to her faith and grandmother’s wise counsel.
The Alabama Women’s Hall of Fame will induct its two newest members at a ceremony on the University of West Alabama campus on March 7 at 11:00 a.m. at Bridges Auditorium. This year’s inductees are broadcaster Mary Olive Enslen Tinder and artist Janet Nolan.
