Creating a warm, supportive environment that fosters student success has always been integral to the University of West Alabama culture. The university has recently strengthened its commitment by partnering with Caring Campus, a national initiative developed by the Institute for Evidenced-Based Change (IEBC), a non-profit organization designed to enhance students’ sense of belonging and increase student retention and success.
Imagine visiting a home in Guatemala or bartering for food in Uganda without ever leaving the country. That’s exactly what 37 UWA students had the opportunity to experience at the simulated rural Global Village and Urban slum at the campus of Southern Institute for Appropriate Technology (SIFAT) in Lineville, Alabama in September.
The University of West Alabama Police Department has brought back a successful campus transportation program that’s designed with both convenience and safety in mind. Student Nighttime Auxiliary Patrol, sponsored by UWA Police Department, provides a safe option for on-campus transportation during from 6 p.m. until midnight, Sunday through Thursday.
UWA Homecoming 2023

Homecoming week kicks off with one of the UWA campus’s favorite traditions, the search for the Key to Victory. Clues for the Key to Victory will be released to students beginning Monday, Oct. 9, at 9 a.m. and continuing at noon and 3 p.m. each day until the key is found and turned in at Brock 202. The student who finds the key wins $1,000.

What happens when you combine thousands of pieces of clay shaped like a small, sweet and chewy gelatin-based candy? One of Jessica Smith’s unique ceramic sculptures of course.

UWA license plate

The University of West Alabama has launched a new design for its collegiate license plate available to Alabama residents. The design, which will be available August 1, features red and white University branding, including a sleek and fierce red and white tiger profile. Proceeds from sales of the plate benefit a scholarship program at UWA.

When completed, a construction project underway at the University of West Alabama will instantly transform the day-to-day operations for several of the Tigers’ athletics programs.
Citing the University of West Alabama’s dedication to safety and emergency preparedness, the National Weather Service has renewed UWA’s status as a StormReady University. The status lasts through April 21, 2026.
UWA Nursing Students with Pro-Certified medals

When the University of West Alabama held commencement exercises in May, nearly 40 graduates from the Division of Nursing decorated their robes with round medallions dangling from red-and-white ribbons.

When Birmingham’s weather warmed and school reached its hiatus, Dr. Tim Edwards spent his teenage summers toiling alongside his father, a brick mason with a meticulous attention to detail so prevalent among skilled artisans.
