The University of West Alabama honored retiring president Dr. Ken Tucker during commencement exercises on December 13, naming him President Emeritus upon his forthcoming retirement at the end of the year. Tucker is the first in the institution’s history to be recognized as president emeritus.
Donald Smith

The University of West Alabama has announced the appointment of Donald Smith as coach of its cheerleading team. Smith assumed the graduate assistant position in August, having spent the last five years in coaching and game day strategy roles.

The University of West Alabama’s Division of Economic & Workforce Development, in partnership with CO.STARTERS of Chattanooga, Tennessee, recently graduated its first class of REBUILD, an entrepreneurial training class to assist small businesses in recovery, rebuilding and growing their firms.
The University of West Alabama will begin the new academic year on Monday, Aug. 17. For the first time since mid-March, the school will hold classes on campus. An in-depth plan has been developed to guide daily operations with emphasis on health and safety in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The University of West Alabama has been awarded a $2.4 million grant from Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA) to provide nursing student scholarships over the next five years. Project EARN will provide scholarships for up to 50 qualifying students in the Ira D. Pruitt Division of Nursing each semester, with $3,000 awarded up to four semesters.

The University of West Alabama will partner with North Carolina based hands-on learning company Betabox to help implement a workforce development initiative funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Labor & the Delta Regional Authority. Design and construction of a mobile unit to support a slate of training needs.
