The University of West Alabama (UWA) and Southern Regional Technical College (SRTC) have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to create a streamlined transfer pathway for students pursuing careers in environmental science and conservation.
Armed with a megawatt smile and ample familial assistance, Aaron Lee appears perfectly suited for the presidency of the University of West Alabama’s Student Government Association. He’s a senior. His sister, Aeriel Lee, is a UWA alumna. Two of his cousins, siblings Jasmine Knox and Jonathan Knox, are former SGA presidents at UWA. Though not preordained, his election seems exactly that.

Ashlee Barnard never intended to become a firefighter. After graduating from high school, she considered her next chapter essentially set: enroll at the University of West Alabama, become a Tigers cheerleader and pursue a career in athletic training, one of UWA’s most popular and professionally successful degree programs.

When Byron Thetford added the role of Title IX coordinator to his duties this year at the University of West Alabama, he already knew the value of concentrating on students’ well-being and their campus experiences. Serving seven years as UWA’s director of student life and support had taught him that much.

Dr. Tyler Strickland is a piano-playing, would-be percussionist from Birmingham who longed to bang drums in his school band, learned instead to play saxophone, married Auburn University’s first female drum major, directed high school bands in two states and spent the last three years as a graduate assistant with the University of Iowa bands.

Since its establishment, the University of West Alabama’s Division of Economic and Workforce Development has focused on improving the outlook for industries and residents in and around Sumter County. That assistance is now receiving national attention.

Nursing students at the University of West Alabama benefit from the experience of the Ira D. Pruitt Division of Nursing faculty and a rigorous curriculum that prepares graduates for licensure examinations and employment.

As an associate professor of sport management at the University of West Alabama, the 55-year-old Hutchinson is renowned for his passion for teaching, a willingness to mentor students, and his admitted love of sports. In May, Hutchinson was selected by the student body for the William E. Gilbert Award, one of UWA’s most prestigious annual honors that recognizes outstanding teaching and excellence in classroom instruction.
Bill Poole may have been born in New Orleans, but Alabama’s western regions decorate his life. He hails from Marengo County. He graduated twice from the University of Alabama, including its School of Law. He represented much of Tuscaloosa County for a decade in the Alabama Legislature, where he helped shape the state’s public education budget.
