Creating a warm, supportive environment that fosters student success has always been integral to the University of West Alabama culture. The university has recently strengthened its commitment by partnering with Caring Campus, a national initiative developed by the Institute for Evidenced-Based Change (IEBC), a non-profit organization designed to enhance students’ sense of belonging and increase student retention and success.

Dr. Tyler Strickland is a piano-playing, would-be percussionist from Birmingham who longed to bang drums in his school band, learned instead to play saxophone, married Auburn University’s first female drum major, directed high school bands in two states and spent the last three years as a graduate assistant with the University of Iowa bands.

Since its establishment, the University of West Alabama’s Division of Economic and Workforce Development has focused on improving the outlook for industries and residents in and around Sumter County. That assistance is now receiving national attention.

Amid Sumter County’s stultifying August humidity and the sight of University of West Alabama freshmen moving into Gilbert Hall dorms, Dr. Melissa Haab’s vision of students re-engaging with campus life is coming into view.

Nursing students at the University of West Alabama benefit from the experience of the Ira D. Pruitt Division of Nursing faculty and a rigorous curriculum that prepares graduates for licensure examinations and employment.

As an associate professor of sport management at the University of West Alabama, the 55-year-old Hutchinson is renowned for his passion for teaching, a willingness to mentor students, and his admitted love of sports. In May, Hutchinson was selected by the student body for the William E. Gilbert Award, one of UWA’s most prestigious annual honors that recognizes outstanding teaching and excellence in classroom instruction.
Bill Poole may have been born in New Orleans, but Alabama’s western regions decorate his life. He hails from Marengo County. He graduated twice from the University of Alabama, including its School of Law. He represented much of Tuscaloosa County for a decade in the Alabama Legislature, where he helped shape the state’s public education budget.
Dr. Jan Miller is ecstatic that a renowned education association has accredited a degree program in the University of West Alabama’s Julia S. Tutwiler College of Education. She’s not satisfied, though. One isn’t enough.
Her Foust Hall office is adorned with jerseys and balls autographed by Tiger athletes. She refers to UWA’s coaches as “my coaches.” Her boss, Director of Athletics Kent Partridge, admits she is his department’s sole constant. “And thank the Good Lord for that,” he said.
The University of West Alabama has announced nearly 700 outstanding undergraduate students named to the President’s List and the Dean’s List for the Spring 2022 academic semester.
