To be considered for the BOSS II scholarship, students must be enrolled in one of the majors offered by the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences. The complete application should be received as early as possible. Application decisions are made on a rolling basis. For full consideration, the application and letter of recommendation must be received by April 15, 2024.

About UWA BOSS II
The UWA BOSS II scholarship is designed to support students financially and academically to complete their college degree within four years, ultimately leading to a career in biological or environmental sciences or joining graduate or professional schools.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded $1.5M in scholarships to The University of West Alabama (UWA), award number 2128109. The funded project will directly benefit undergraduate students throughout the next six years. The project title is Biology Opportunities and Scholarships for Success II (BOSS II). Students accepted in the program will receive an annual scholarship of $8,500, renewable for up to 4 years. Additional scholarships, such as UWA Trustee’s Scholarships, offer up to $12,000. Stacking scholarships can make family contributions at minimum or zero for qualified students.
NSF will also support many student activities, including summer boot camp, well-being assessment, tutoring, academic counseling (including metacognitive study techniques), research opportunities, and travel for BOSS II scholars to present research at professional conferences. These resources will ensure the UWA BOSS II scholars’ will have satisfactory performance leading to completion of degrees in a timely fashion and successful placement into the workforce or graduate or professional schools.

This project is funded by NSF’s Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (S-STEM) program. The S-STEM program seeks to increase the number of low-income academically talented students with demonstrated financial need who earn degrees in STEM fields. It also aims to improve future STEM workers’ education and generate knowledge about academic success, retention, transfer, graduation, and academic/career pathways of low-income students.
