Qualifications:

Required

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Certification from the Alabama Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission (APOSTC).
  • 3-5 years’ experience as a certified police officer.
  • Strong knowledge of police methods, procedures, and investigative techniques.
  • Understanding of relevant federal and state laws, and municipal ordinances.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Police Department personnel, other UWA employees, outside law enforcement agencies, and the public.
  • Ability to meet attendance schedule with dependability and consistency.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
  • Ability to analyze evidence effectively.
  • Skilled in interviewing and questioning.
  • Proficient in organizing and preparing clear and concise reports.
  • Competence in the use of firearms and motor vehicles.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform all activities in accordance with the law and the University of West Alabama Police Department’s general orders.
  • Adhere to the Law Enforcement Code of Ethics.
  • Enforce criminal and traffic laws, exercising appropriate officer discretion in placing charges and making arrests.
  • Investigate suspicious or criminal activity and conduct assigned criminal investigations.
  • Maintain records and files; prepare detailed reports and testimony for court.
  • Interview suspects, witnesses, complainants, and victims.
  • Gather evidence, conduct surveillance, apprehend violators, and testify in court as necessary.
  • Obtain and serve warrants and make arrests.
  • Conduct crime scene tasks, including photography and fingerprinting.
  • Develop and maintain detailed reports, records, and files.
  • Establish and meet with informants to gather intelligence.
  • Maintain contact with reliable and confidential sources of information.
  • Conduct background investigations.
  • Coordinate with the District Attorney’s office in trial case preparation.
  • Collaborate with other agencies on mutual issues.
  • Assist co-workers as needed.
  • Respond to complaints and inquiries.
  • Provide backup to other officers when required.
  • Gather intelligence on suspects.
  • Maintain accurate logs of evidence.
  • Submit requests for laboratory analysis of evidence.
  • Uphold the chain of custody for evidence.
  • Other duties as assigned.
