Position Summary: The Dean of the Julia S. Tutwiler College of Education is a key leadership position responsible for advancing its mission, enhancing its academic programs, fostering research and scholarship, and promoting a supportive and inclusive environment for faculty, staff, and students. The Dean will provide strategic vision and leadership to ensure the College’s continued growth and success, align its goals with the university’s strategic plan, and uphold the highest standards of academic excellence.

Qualifications

  • Earned doctorate in the field of Education from an accredited institution and qualified to hold professional rank in one of the departments in the College.
  • Proven experience in higher education academic leadership and administration, preferably at the level of assistant dean, associate dean, or higher.
  • A distinguished record of academic achievement and scholarship suitable for such appointment.
  • Demonstrated ability to obtain grant funding, implement grant projects, and abide by federal and state guidelines.
  • Experience with budget management and resource allocation.
  • Experience with accreditation processes and standards in higher education.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • A strong understanding of online learning and adult learning needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to build collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • The ability to work in rural education and experience preparing teachers, school leaders, and school support personnel for rural districts.
  • A vision for the future of education and the role of the College in addressing educational challenges.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Leadership and Administration
    1. Provide visionary leadership and strategic direction for the College of Education.
    1. Oversee academic programs, faculty recruitment, development, and evaluation.
    1. Manage the College’s budget, resources, and facilities efficiently and effectively.
    1. Foster a collaborative and inclusive environment among faculty, staff, and students.
    1. Ensure compliance with accreditation standards and support continuous improvement efforts.
    1. Serve as an ex-officio member of the Board of Directors for the University Charter School.
  2. Academic Excellence and Innovation
    1. Promote high standards of teaching, research, and service within the College.
    1. Encourage and support innovative teaching methods, curricula, and research initiatives.
    1. Facilitate collaboration and partnerships within and outside the university.
    1. Oversee the development and assessment of academic programs to ensure they meet current and future needs.
    1. Stay abreast of needed programs and have programs in the pipeline based on market research.
  3. Faculty and Staff Development
    1. Support professional development opportunities for faculty and staff.
    1. Foster a culture of mentoring, collaboration, and recognition of faculty and staff achievements.
    1. Evaluate faculty and staff annually and provide timely feedback on performance.
  4. Student Success
    1. Advocate for student needs and support initiatives that enhance student learning and development.
    1. Promote a culture of engagement, inclusion, and academic success among students.
    1. Oversee student recruitment, retention, and graduation efforts for the College.
    1. Use data to drive all instructional decisions.
  5. External Relations and Fundraising
    1. Represent the College to external stakeholders, including alumni, donors, community partners, and professional organizations.
    1. Work with the university’s advancement office to secure external funding through grants, donations, and partnerships.
    1. Foster relationships with local schools, educational agencies, and other relevant organizations.
  6. Strategic Planning and Implementation
    1. Develop and implement strategic plans that align with the university’s mission and goals.
    1. Monitor and report on the College’s progress toward strategic objectives.
    1. Engage faculty, staff, students, and external stakeholders in the planning and implementation process.
  7. Instructional delivery
    1. Promote best practices in multiple modes of educational delivery, including both online and face-to-face learning environment.
    1. Schedule online & campus courses one year in advance.
    1. Recruit and retain online & campus adjuncts who are experts in the fields of study within the College.
    1. Monitor and support education in all its forms, including continuing professional development for educators.
