The UWA Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences in the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics invites applications for the Assistant/Associate Professor of Biology position. The rank of associate professor can be further considered for qualified candidates. 

Responsibilities:

  • Teach 5-6 courses (21 hours) per year, including introductory biology and upper- and graduate-level specialty courses.
  • Teach online courses based on departmental needs and applicant’s expertise.
  • Direct undergraduate and graduate research.
  • Develop an extramurally funded research program.
  • Serve on departmental and University committees.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Chairperson and Dean.
  • Fulfill other duties expected of a faculty member, such as student advising, curriculum development, departmental recruitment and retention activities, public service, etc.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Ph.D. in biological sciences or a related field.  ABD candidates are considered for instructor rank until the Ph.D. is obtained.
  • A commitment to excellence in teaching undergraduate and graduate courses with a student-centered, active-learning approach.
  • A commitment to excellence in research with undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Demonstrated potential and dedication to attract extramural funding.
  • Ability to work effectively with administration, faculty, staff, and students from varied socio-economic/ethnic backgrounds.

Desired:

  • Postdoctoral experience in modern and emerging technologies.
  • Recent research publications.
  • Successful teaching in a small, student-centered regional university setting.
  • Successful experience in directing undergraduate and graduate research.
  • Demonstrated ability to obtain extramural funding from public and/or private sources
  • Successful experience in advising students.
  • Experience with online courses.
  • A commitment to be involved in recruiting students to programs.
